It’s not everyday that a U.S. Congressman comes to visit, but we were happy to have Bill Flores come to speak with us Brother Knights as our monthly speaker. Thanks to Rick Starnes, who invited the congressman, our Knights got to hear a little about the current agenda of this new member of the Freshman class of Congress.

Bill, as he insisted we call him (instead of Congressman Flores), described to us his 3 layers of priorities with priority A being taking care of the current spending/deficit and taxing situation.  One of the Knights of Columbus’s priorities, is supporting the right to life.  It was nice to hear that Congressman Flores is a strong advocate for life as cited by the The National Right to Life committee.  That was on his priority B list to insist on all rights to life.

While we were intent on listening to Bill, Brother Art Barry and his wonderful wife, Tiffany (along with help from Brother Ralf Trujillo), made us a wonderful feast including dessert. We were all very much appreciative.

Thank you Congressman Flores (Bill) for taking the time to speak with us.  Thanks goes to Rick for inviting him and many thanks to the hours of cooking to Art and Tiffany.  It was a great monthly meeting (and we had lots of people in attendance).

November schedules…

Brothers,

It’s hard to believe that it is already November 2010. All Hallows
Eve is tonight, Thanksgiving is in four weeks, then comes Advent and
Christmas. Before you know it we will be wishing friends and family a
Happy 2011!

Monday is November 1st, All Saints Day, and a Holy Day in the Catholic
Church. On Tuesday we celebrate All Souls Day, and the Knights of
Columbus will gather as a Council for mass @ 7 am that day. We had
more than two dozen Knights join us for mass on October 12 to
celebrate Columbus Day. Surely we can get more than two dozen members
to attend mass in honor of our deceased Brother Knights. I’m counting
on a big turn out for our memorial mass on Tuesday November 2nd.

November 2nd is also Election Day. If you have not voted yet, I urge
everyone to cast his ballot on Tuesday. Every election in our country
is historic, but this year we have an opportunity to advance the
Culture of Life like never before. I ask you to prayerfully consider
voting for those candidates that will protect the unborn, our children
and our elderly. Remember, we can’t pray Pro-Life on Sunday and vote
Pro-Choice on Election Day.

Wednesday, November 3rd, is our monthly business meeting. We will
gather to recite the rosary @ 6 pm in the Chapel @ St. Thomas Aquinas
Catholic Church. Our social and dinner will follow immediately
afterwards @ 6:30 pm in Zurek Hall. This month’s program is our own
Fr. Wade talking about his journey to the Priesthood. Our Council
meeting will start promptly at 7:30 pm.

Here are a couple of more dates to keep in mind, Wednesday, November
10, we will have a first degree @ St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in
Bryan. There will be a 2nd and 3rd Degree in Columbus on Sunday,
November 28th.

God Bless,

Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Chicago Auxiliary Bishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSp.S, 53, as the 6th Archbishop of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. He will succeed Archbishop José H. Gomez, who was named in April 2010 to be the successor to Cardinal Roger Mahony of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles upon his retirement in early 2011. The Vatican made Archbishop-designate García-Siller’s appointment official on October 14, 2010 at 5 a.m. Central Time. His installation as Archbishop of San Antonio is scheduled for November 23, 2010.

When he received the news of his appointment the Archbishop-designate said, “I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to serve the people of the Archdiocese. I felt real happiness and joy tempered by a deep awareness of the great responsibility I had been asked to embrace. From the moment I said yes, I felt, in faith, a deep affection for the people of the Archdiocese of San Antonio.”

Introducing the Archbishop-designate, during a news conference at the archdiocesan Pastoral Center, Apostolic Administrator, Bishop Oscar Cantú said: “I am delighted that the Holy Father sends us a shepherd who knows deeply the Good Shepherd; one who is passionate about his love for Jesus Christ, about his love for the Church, and about his love for his sheep.”

Archbishop-designate Gustavo García-Siller was born in San Luis Potosí S.L.P., Mexico, to Gustavo García Suarez and Maria Cristina Siller de Garcia. He is the eldest of 15 children. His brother, Eugene, is also a priest.

He studied at St. Johns Seminary in Camarillo, California, and the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, and holds master of arts degrees in philosophy, divinity and psychology. He was ordained in Guadalajara, June 22, 1984.

He served at St. Josephs Parish in Selma, California, from 1984-1988, and then studied at Western Jesuit University, Guadalajara. From 1994-1999, he was rector of houses of studies of his order in Lynwood and Long Beach, California; and in Portland, Oregon. From 1999 to 2002, he was Rector of the theologate house of his congregation in Oxnard, California, and also served in three parishes in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He was named superior of the Holy Spirit Congregations province in 2002. As a member of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, he has served as a member of the Subcommittees on African-American Affairs and Hispanic Affairs.

Archbishop-designate Garcia-Siller is a member of the Congregation of the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit. He was superior of the congregation’s United States and Canadian province, Cristo Sacerdote, when he was named an auxiliary bishop of Chicago in 2003.

The Archdiocese of San Antonio comprises 23,180 square miles. It has a total population of 2,315,988 people, of whom 702,547, or 30 percent, are Catholic.

Mass – Columbus Day – Tuesday Oct 12 – 7am

Brothers,

Tomorrow, Tuesday, October 12 marks the 518th anniversary of Columbus’
discovery of the Americas. It is appropriate that we gather for a
celebration of the Holy Eucharist just as Columbus did on his day of
discovery. Mass tomorrow morning will be at 7 am in the Chapel @ St .
Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.

I am asking all Knights of Columbus to please join me tomorrow morning
for the celebration of the Eucharist on Columbus Day. We’ll see you @
7 am.

Meeting Tomorrow Night – Wednesday Oct 6

Brothers,

Just a reminder of our monthly meeting tomorrow night. We begin with
a rosary in the chapel at 6 pm, followed by food and fellowship in
Zurek Hall from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. Our program this month is from
Brother Dan King. Our meeting will begin promptly at 7:30 pm. It
promises to be an action packed hour, one you will not want to miss.

We will be accepting nominations for a new Warden and a new Inside
Guard to fill vacancies we currently have.

Please join me in welcoming our new Knights! Brothers Pat Zapalac,
Ron Fernandes, Christopher Diem, Adam Falco, Michael Schuett, Bob
McKee, and Bobby Reynoso all took their 2nd and 3rd Degree on Sunday,
October 3. Congratulations to you all for attaining full Knighthood
in our Order.

We held a 1st degree on September 15 and we added two new members to
our roles. Please welcome Brothers Chris Diem and Thadd Hargett into
our ranks.

Speaking of new members, please welcome Fr. Wade Russell to Council
3205. Fr. Russell transfered into our council last month.

In October we have several activities for you to join in. We will
field two teams in the charity golf tournament on October 11
benefitting Catholic Charities. We have our annual Clergy
Appreciation banquet on October 21 at St. Joseph’s Parish in Bryan.
The 2nd annual Hike For Life will be Saturday, October 23 at Steve
Beachy Park in College Station. The annual fundraising dinner for
Good Samaritan Pregnancy Services will be on October 28 at St. Thomas
Aquinas.

We still need help selling raffle tickets, and the 2nd annual wine and
cheese tasting fundraiser is just around the corner on December 8.

So, there’s plenty to do. You do not have to do everything, but we do
hope you’ll pick out the projects that appeal to you and lend a
hand.
